Vela Luka, Croatia - holiday information

Vela Luka, Korcula, Croatia – visitor information

In a 9,2km long bay, which is one of the best docking areas on the eastern Adriatic, on the western side of Korcula lies the town Vela Luka. The nearby picturesque isles, coves, steep cliffs and valleys make this place so attractive and enable vast vacationing opportunities. It is because of the untouched nature why tourism has been expanding so quickly here.

Vela Luka is surrounded by hillside which is domineered by Hum – 376 m high hill which makes an attractive lookout from which you can enjoy in one of the most beautiful sunsets on the Adriatic. Surroundings of Vela Luka, as well as the rest of the island are covered in pine as well as figs, carob and olives from which the famous quality oil is made. What stands out from all the landmarks of this city is surely Vela Spila, located in the southern side of the hill Pinski rat above the Kala cove. It is one of the most valuable archaeological sites in this part of Europe. In it artefacts and remains of life from prehistory have been found such as the ceramics collection, a bowl and other items from daily use of people from early Stone Age. In the cultural centre located in the centre of Vela Luka visitors can look at the rich collection of archaeological items, and also have an opportunity to visit the cave.
The cultural life of this town is diverse and made from various art branches. In the cultural centre located next to the parish church of St. Joseph you can enjoy in a gallery with a drawing collection, sculptures and wooden ship models. The artist Henry Moore is only one of the famous artists that enriched this centre in which, in the year 1968, the first international meeting of artists was held. One thing that depicts the life style in Vela Luka perfectly is Dalmatian song, and the city has been sung in many popular pieces. Oliver Dragojević and Jasna Zlokić are only one of the few acknowledged artists from this town.
“Kumpanija” is an old knight game that originates from the organized militia that has defended the island through centuries from invaders and occupiers. “Kumpanija” is specific and is played only on the island of Korcula in time of church and national holidays. The main annual event is held every year on the 19th of March on the holiday of St. Joseph (Sv. Josip) who is the saint patron of Vela Luka.

Talking about entertainment, the winter months are not filled with anything special except the famous carnival festivities which are held in February. The summer culture/entertainment programme begins with festivities in praise of the holiday of St. John (Sv. Ivan, 24.06) when a traditional boat race is held.
The rich entertainment programme during the summer months enable visitors to enjoy appearances of the “Kumpanija” folklore company which are held every week, as well as many other popular music concerts and traditional klapa concerts along with festive fishing nights and theatre performances.
Discotheques and cafe bars also have entertainment programmes with popular music as well as foreign artist performances during the summer months. The gastronomic offer in restaurants is also various and you can enjoy in a variety of Dalmatian specialties and try some of the best Croatian vines. Some of the most famous restaurants are “Bata”, “More”, “Davorin”, “Dalmacija” and taverns “Skalinada”, “Lučica” ect. We also recommend that you go and visit the agro tourism spots in the heart of the island where you will be able to feel the domestic atmosphere and enjoy in domestic dishes and vines.
